Existing Policy Proposals
Considering that 70% of New York City’s carbon emissions originate from construction and buildings, there are clearly opportunities to make the built environment more sustainable. Some efforts are already in the works, such as the Mayor's 80x50 initiative, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, and the Zero Waste initiative, which aims to eliminate waste to landfills by 2030. Meanwhile, the City Council has pursued numerous bills, including one requiring posting of energy grades on buildings, and another which would penalize buildings which exceed energy and fossil fuel targets. Representatives from the City will discuss existing and proposed policies during this session.

Equity in a Sustainable Environment
One critical area for discussion is the idea of maintaining equity in the context of carbon reduction. Too often the development and implementation of environmental policies do not fairly reach and engage with a full spectrum of the population in the city. This session examines how designers and planners can support efforts towards creating a more sustainable city that is inclusive of all people. The panel will consist of community and advocacy organizations that tackle carbon reduction related issues through an equity lens.
